results announced: Survey May 4 and 5
What has been researched?
The municipality of Wageningen and the National Committee Commemoration of the 1945 Capitulations want to know whether people consider remembering and cherishing freedom important (still), how they do this, and whether they think it is appropriate in the current time (with wars in the world and in Europe). The survey was completed by 89 participants.
May 4th and 5th are and will remain important
Most participants (94%) continue to find remembrance & cherishing/celebrating important for the future. We must be grateful for the people who fought for our freedom. It is said that this is especially important now. Freedom is not a given, and we must realize what (in)freedom is.
We remember war victims
Most participants (66/89) remember the victims of World War II, or (61/89) remember war victims from around the world.
May 5th
Most participants (74%) celebrate Liberation Day every year or most years (20%). Some people suggest that there should be ‘calmer’ spots for people with children.
What will we do?
We endorse the opinion that remembering and cherishing freedom is more important than ever. We will continue to raise awareness for freedom by organizing activities on May 4th and 5th, and throughout the year, for all ages.
We will involve the youth even more in the coming years. We will organize, among other things, a children's festival on May 5th and have artists who are popular with the youth talk about what freedom means to them. But other target groups are also considered. We will bring freedom soup to elderly people who cannot come to the city center and create places to sit for people who find the festival grounds too crowded.
